Michael O’Brien in Better Homes + Gardens: Smarter Ways to Water Your Garden

Better Homes & Gardens recently featured Michael O’Brien, landscape designer and founder of Hommes + Gardens, in an article exploring the benefits of soaker hoses — an irrigation method that saves water while promoting healthy root growth.

“I snake them through vegetable rows, curve them around a cluster of grasses, or loop them around newly planted fruit trees,” says O’Brien. “If I’m going out of town just after installing a garden, I connect the soaker hose to a hose bib timer and let it run in the early morning for about 45 minutes.”

The piece highlights how thoughtful irrigation can feel effortless — using flexible, low-profile systems that nourish plants without disrupting the landscape’s design. It’s a principle O’Brien brings to every project: designing gardens that look good and live well.
