Hand-Blown Ribbed Bell Glass Ornament with Vertical Red and Gold Striping, c. 1935–1955

Hand-Blown Ribbed Bell Glass Ornament with Vertical Red and Gold Striping, c. 1935–1955

$98.00

Hand-blown molded glass bell ornament produced in Central Europe, circa 1935–1955, most likely originating from Germany (Lauscha region) or nearby Eastern European glassmaking centers. The ornament is formed as a ribbed bell, blown into a vertical mold that creates evenly spaced fluting from crown to base.

The interior was finished with mercury silvering, then selectively accented with hand-applied vertical striping in red and warm gold, a decorative technique used to emphasize form and movement rather than surface pattern. The color was applied after molding, following the rib structure rather than masking it—an indicator of higher-quality workshop production.

The silvering has softened naturally with age, creating a layered, mineral-like patina prized by collectors. The glass body shows subtle irregularity in thickness consistent with mouth-blown manufacture. Finished with its original metal cap and wire hanger.

Bell ornaments of this period were designed to catch low winter light and sway gently on sparse trees, making them more architectural than ornamental in intent.
