Antique French Cast Stone Garden Lions with Weathered Patina, 1930s

$1,895.00
Pair of recumbent cast stone garden lions with richly weathered surfaces, modeled as opposing entrance guardians on rectangular plinth bases. Each lion is shown reclining with the head turned forward, detailed paws, curled tail, and a deeply articulated mane that gives the pair a strong architectural presence. The aged gray surface has natural outdoor patina, pitting, moss and lichen residue, and softened edges from exposure, giving the statues the established character sought after in antique and vintage European garden ornament.

The form relates to the long tradition of classical and neoclassical lion statuary used at garden entrances, terraces, stairways, courtyards, and estate paths. Lions have historically been used in European garden design as symbols of protection, permanence, and strength, often placed symmetrically to frame an entry or anchor an axial view. Comparable French and European cast stone examples are commonly cataloged as early to mid-20th century garden ornaments, while carved limestone examples with confirmed provenance command higher prices.
