Vintage Willy Guhl Red Planter (1960s, Switzerland) – Mid Century Concrete Planter
This exceptional vintage Willy Guhl planter attributed to Willy Guhl is a highly desirable example of Swiss modernist design from the 1960s. Crafted in Switzerland from solid cement, this vintage concrete planter reflects Guhl’s mastery of form, material, and durability. Known for pushing the boundaries of industrial materials into sculptural art, Willy Guhl created pieces that were both functional and architecturally striking, and this planter is no exception.
The rectangular silhouette of this red concrete planter is enhanced by softly scalloped, wave-like edges, lending a sense of movement and rhythm to its otherwise clean, modern lines. The bold red finish, layered with areas of naturally worn white beneath, has developed a beautifully aged vintage patina over time. These surface variations are the result of decades of use and exposure and contribute greatly to the planter’s authentic mid-century character. Each example presents slightly different tonal shifts and wear patterns, making every piece truly unique.
This rectangular concrete planter is constructed from heavy, solid cement—not faux or lightweight composite—giving it a substantial presence and ensuring longevity for both indoor and outdoor use as an indoor outdoor planter. The condition is consistent with vintage age, including surface wear, minor chips, and texture variations, all of which enhance its visual appeal rather than detract from it.
We currently have five planters available, each with its own distinctive red and white coloration. Ideal for modern landscapes, courtyards, terraces, or interiors, this mid century planter functions equally well as a vessel for plantings or as a standalone sculptural planter.
