Mid-Century Hand-Blown Glass House Ornament with Blue Roof and Mercury Silvering, c. 1940–1960

Mid-Century Hand-Blown Glass House Ornament with Blue Roof and Mercury Silvering, c. 1940–1960

$110.00

Hand-blown glass house-form ornament, produced in Central Europe circa 1940–1960, likely Germany or Czechoslovakia, where architectural motifs were a recurring but limited ornament form.

The ornament is molded in a simplified house silhouette, with softly faceted walls and a pitched roof. The interior is finished with mercury silvering, now naturally mottled with age, creating a snow-like effect that collectors prize rather than correct. The roof is washed in translucent cobalt-blue glass, applied while hot, giving the piece depth and a subtle sense of place—suggestive of winter sky rather than decoration alone.

Unlike novelty figures, house ornaments required careful mold alignment and even wall thickness to prevent collapse during cooling. The slight irregularities visible in the roof edge and body confirm hand production rather than later machine molding.

Finished with original metal cap and wire hanger.

This piece sits at the intersection of folk architecture and holiday ornament, making it especially appealing to collectors who prefer form over character.
